During this presentation, Dr. James Gibb will discuss the history of pottery in Western Maryland.

While most pottery used in the USA prior to the late 19th century was imported from the United Kingdom, locally important potting traditions developed in Baltimore, Alexandria, and in Frederick and Washington counties from the mid-18th through late 19th centuries. Archaeological excavations near Hagerstown have produced large numbers of these wares, some quire beautiful. This illustrated presentation describes the history of potting in Western Maryland and the kinds of ceramics made.
