During this virtual presentation, Dr. James Gibb will use an archaeological lens to discuss Maryland's Octoraro Canal.
England’s craze for canals spread to the Americas, prompting schemes by many of the new country’s leaders, including George Washington. While the Erie Canal, built between 1817 and 1825, and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (1828) are the best known of the early canals, Maryland’s Octoraro Canal, completed in 1803, precedes both by a generation. This illustrated presentation describes the results of excavations of two of its locks and surrounding commercial sites.
