Learn about events that led to the founding of the US Constitution! This presentation from Dr. Jim Gibb focuses on political unrest in the late 18th century and the formation of political parties.
Dissatisfaction with the inadequacy of the Articles of Confederation, especially in terms of paying state war debts, fostering trade and adjudicating disputes among the 13 independent states, set Americans in motion toward a more perfect union. This presentation highlights events that show economic and political unrest in the years leading up to the Constitution, including the Pennsylvania Mutiny of 1783, Shays' Rebellion, and the Paper Money Riot. It also discusses the growth of American political parties in the late 1700s, with a special focus on Maryland history.
During this series, we will explore the deficiencies of the initial Articles of Confederation, the further refinement of such ideas as the sovereignty of the People, and the development of our Nation’s “owners’ manual,” the document that instructs government as to its role in American society and the US Constitution’s constraints on government.
This presentation will be held live over Zoom. It will also be recorded and uploaded to the St. Mary's County Library YouTube channel.
