Interested in local history and archaeology? This presentation investigates Southern Maryland 18th-century history through the lens of a plantation house.

Excavation revealed a detached kitchen/slave quarter at Sellmans Connexion, a Southern Maryland plantation house (now called Woodlawn) built in 1735 and substantially enlarged in 1841. Such service buildings commonly occurred on "showcase" plantations in the Chesapeake Region circa 1740-1864 (until Emancipation), typically housing the enslaved people who worked in them. Architectural survey data, architectural material, cooking utensils, and ceramic and glass wares provide a provisional model for detached kitchen assemblages.

This program will be presented by guest speakers Dr. Jim Gibb, Barbara Israel, and Stephen Israel.

This event will be held live over Zoom. It will also be recorded and uploaded to the St. Mary's County Library YouTube channel.
