Zoom Room 1One challenge that archaeologists face is materials decaying, such as iron turning into rust. This presentation discusses how iron artifacts can be stabilized, using an example from Southern Maryland!
Oxidation of iron artifacts—rusting—can turn a bag of nails into a bag of dust in as little as a decade. Rust also impedes accurate identification of nail type and size. This talk shares the SEAL Team’s approach to removing rust and stabilizing iron artifacts. Material from the Port Tobacco blacksmith shop recovered by the Charles County archaeologist and Archaeological Society illustrate the process.
This program will be presented by Dr. Jim Gibb, George Riseling, and Chloë Moyer of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's archaeology laboratory, SEAL.
This event will be held live over Zoom. It will also be recorded and uploaded to the St. Mary's County Library YouTube channel.
