This illustrated talk is the first public presentation of recently completed archaeological excavations at the Ampthill Grange plantation site in Bowie, MD located in Prince George's County.
Archaeological excavations of the Ampthill Grange site exposed buildings, privies, and numerous trash deposits dating between the 1720s and 1770s. The remains of meals, represented by large numbers of bones, burned beans, and grains reveal what the Goe household (who were Anglo-Scots) ate, and how they prepared and presented those foods. Dr. James Gibb will present what archaeologists found and what he thinks it all means. Dietary studies from several other Colonial-era sites in the region provide some context for interpreting Ampthill Grange and the Goe family who occupied the site.
