Drawing inspiration from the Library's native garden, artist Parran Collery, of Eartha Handmade Tile will lead participants through the process of making their own relief sculpted tile.
This is an all-day workshop for ages 14 and up and beginners are welcome. The program will be from 9:30-3:00, with a break for participants to lunch on their own. The final tiles will be ready for pickup approximately 2 weeks after the program.
Participants will spend some time in the Library’s native plant garden sketching and then use those drawings as inspiration for their tile design. Parran will guide everyone through the steps of creating a drawing, cutting shapes in clay, assembling the tile, and adding color.
Parran has created mosaic art in public settings throughout Southern Maryland. She's currently working on a series of mosaic sculptural panels for our Native Plants Garden, slated for installation in the Fall. Her current work, including this program, is made possible by grant funding from the Maryland State Arts Council.
This workshop is an opportunity to follow along in her tile making process, spend time observing local nature, and get your hands in clay!
