For moviemakers in Benin, West Africa, stories are everywhere—hidden in the land itself, just waiting to be unearthed. Registration is Recommended. Walk-ins welcome as space allows.

Anthropologist Dr. Brian C. Smithson shares his experience co-creating a full-length movie in West Africa, learning from master moviemakers, and translating oral traditions to the screen. He’ll bring film props, show movie clips, and describe how African movie makers bring spirits to life for the camera.

He’ll also discuss his upcoming book, Aesthetics of Praise, a behind-the-scenes look at how faith, rivalry, and resilience shape African stories.

This is storytelling in its oldest form: passed down, remixed, and refreshed—one frame at a time.
