Archaeologist Jim Gibb describes the process by which the Stephens plantation was identified and studied, and what we have learned about European settlers on Indian lands in the early Colonial period.
William and Magdalen Stephens were among the first European settlers to establish plantations on the Calvert County side of the Patuxent River, and among the earliest of the colonists to join the Society of Friends, or Quakers. Excavation of their plantation house and subsequent analyses of finds by the J. Patterson Park & Museum reveal something of how the family lived, how they died, and what they had hoped to accomplish in between.
