In this presentation, Dr. James Gibb will use an archaeological framework to discuss railroads in Southern Maryland.
Trains are a rare sight in Southern Maryland in the 21st century, only occasionally seen delivering coal to power plants. They were far more common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Little remains of the Baltimore & Drum Point, Chesapeake Beach, Washington, Baltimore & Potomac, and Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis Electric railroads. In this illustrated talk, Dr. Gibb will briefly discuss the history of these railroads and archaeological evidence of the railroad grades and the Fischer station on the Chesapeake Beach line.
