Each year, thousands of Marylanders read one book as a community. This year, the theme is “What We Collect/What We Tell”. Participants will meet to discuss the book and write their own poems.
This year's One Maryland, One Book is "Kin: Rooted in Hope" written by Carole Boston Weatherford with art by Jeffery Boston Weatherford. Their book focuses on the Weatherford's own ancestors who were among the founders of Maryland and gives these individuals voice through enslavement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
This program combines a book discussion group with a poetry writing session. Participants are invited to bring in a family photo, artifact, etc. that has multi-generational ties, and write a poem honoring that memory by adding details that breathe new life into it. Paper and writing utensils provided, no experience needed!
Find your own copy of Kin in our catalog or on our digital apps, Libby and the Palace Project.
