Did you know being a Lighthouse Keeper was the first non-clerical government job opened to women in Maryland? Learn their stories!
In the United States lighthouse keeping history, a total of 173 women served as keepers or assistant keepers. Twenty of these women served in Maryland! Learn the stories of these women who served at the Piney Point, Blackistone, Upper Cedar Point, Point Lookout Lighthouses. Also learn about the last female keeper in the U.S. and the only female keeper in the U.S. Coast Guard Service, who served at Turkey Point on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
This history seminar is presented by Karen Stone, of the St. Mary's County Museums Department. This event is part of the Southern Maryland 250th Semiquincentennial, Maryland 250th, and America 250th celebration, commemorating Southern Maryland's contributions to our nation's founding.
